Background of the Study
Flooding is a recurrent natural hazard that significantly disrupts urban livelihoods, particularly in vulnerable communities such as Abeokuta South (Afolabi, 2023). In this area, seasonal floods have led to loss of property, displacement of residents, and deterioration of public infrastructure (Ogunyemi, 2024). Recent studies highlight that the economic and social ramifications of flooding extend beyond immediate physical damage, affecting employment, health, and community stability (Ibrahim, 2023). The interplay of climate change, urban planning deficits, and inadequate drainage systems exacerbates these challenges, making flood management a critical urban concern (Chisom, 2025). This study explores how flooding impacts urban livelihoods in Abeokuta South by analyzing economic losses, health outcomes, and community resilience (Obi, 2023). The research aims to generate actionable insights that can guide urban planning and disaster management policies to mitigate the adverse effects of flooding.
Statement of the Problem
Flooding in Abeokuta South has resulted in significant socio-economic disruptions, yet comprehensive research on its impact on urban livelihoods is limited (Ogunleye, 2023). The recurrent inundation of urban areas has led to loss of income, property damage, and public health challenges (Chukwu, 2024). The lack of effective flood management strategies and resilient urban infrastructure further exacerbates these issues (Adegoke, 2023). This study seeks to investigate the multifaceted impact of flooding on livelihoods and provide recommendations for improved urban resilience.
